There’s no better time to get fit than the new year. Changing your lifestyle and becoming more health-conscious will vastly improve your life—both mentally and physically. If you’re ready to change your life, here’s how to lose fat and build lean muscle.

Change How You Eat

One of the biggest changes you will have to make to your lifestyle is what you eat every day. To lose fat and build lean muscle, you will need to eat more protein, reduce how many carbs you consume, and consume healthy fats. The best way to make sure you are getting all the essential nutrients is to meal prep for the week and take supplements.

Perfect Your Form

In addition to changing your diet, you will undoubtedly have to hit the gym in order to build that muscle. When you are in the gym, lift free weights as much as you can, so you can maximize your workout. You will also want to try to perfect your form, so you are truly working the muscles you’re targeting. That’s why you should focus on the way you are lifting instead of how much. However, you’ll want to challenge yourself and lift more as you progress in the coming months.

Do Fasted Cardio

Another great method you should do is some form of fasted cardio, which is especially effective on a fitness rower. What fasted cardio means is that you are essentially doing your cardio on an empty stomach. By doing fasted cardio, your body will start to burn fat, because you are working on an empty tank. Fasted cardio is typically something people do in the morning, but you can do it later in the day if you haven’t eaten in three to four hours for it to be effective.

Drink Water

As you attempt to lose weight, you will also want to drink a lot of water in a day—and only drink water. The great thing about water is that it will keep you hydrated without adding any extra calories that you would if you drank soda or alcohol instead. If you’re someone who needs to drink coffee in the morning, there are healthy alternatives out there, but you should keep consumption to a minimum.

Be Patient

Something you’ll want to do as you try to lose fat and build lean muscle is to be patient. Achieving the results you want will take several months and require ample accountability and discipline. Don’t get discouraged if you gain a couple of pounds or cheat on your diet. Think long term when it comes to your health goals and be as consistent as possible.

Making a lifestyle change in 2020 will require a lot of planning, which can be done correctly by knowing how to lose fat and build muscle before you go ahead with it.
